Yom Kippur, also known as The Day of Atonement is the second holy day we celebrate in the fall. It comes just ten days after Yom Teruah. It is seen by most as the holiest day of the year. This is a day for prayer, repentance, reflection, and seeking forgiveness. Many will go to others and ask for forgiveness, like mentioned in Matthew 5, in addition to seeking forgiveness from The Lord. A solemn assembly is usually held with corporate prayers of repentance and fasting.

BIBLE VERSES ABOUT YOM TERUAH

Leviticus 16:29-31
"And it shall be a statute to you forever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you. For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you. You shall be clean before the Lord from all your sins. It is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict yourselves; it is a statute forever"
Leviticus 23:31-32
"You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath.”
HOW TO CELEBRATE

Holy Convocation
Gather with friends, family, or your Bible study group. This is a corporate day of prayer and repentance. Breaking the fast together certainly is a lot of fun!

Offering
The original Hebrews says to make an offering by fire to The Lord. We don't have temple to do that right now, so what else can you offer?

Affliction
We're told to afflict ourselves. Many people will fast food and drinks on this day. For our young daughter, she is afflicted by not having technology!

Solemn Rest
God wants to spend time with you and your family today. He's asking you to take the day off work and focus on Him. He loves you. Enjoy it!

COMMON TRADITIONS

Al Chet
Many synagogues will do something called the Al Chet, or the All Sins Prayer. It's usually said out loud as a congregation, just to help everyone feel a little more comfortable and not singled out. It pretty much covers every sin you possibly could have committed this year. Some congregations end up saying this prayer ten times during the course of Yom Kippur. Is it Biblically commanded to say this prayer even once? No. Do I appreciate saying it at least once? Yes.
Wearing White
It's a fun tradition to wear white today to symbolize being washed of all our sins!
Let's Plan This Thing!
Who
Who are you going to celebrate with? It's a holy convocation meant to be spend with other believers. Do you have friends who would be interested in learning more about the holy days?
Where
All right, where is this happening? Do you have a usual house you meet up at for Bible study? Can everyone come to your house? Maybe your church building will let you use the sanctuary!
Service
Think about some music you'd like to use to worship. Are you going to do the Al Chet prayer? You'll need to make copies for everyone coming. Are you going to chill all day and then break the fast together?
